Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vanport, Pennsylvania. For individuals needing drug or alcohol tests using hair samples, we excel in this field, with numerous centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, either from the scalp or body. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer them over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair tests. Their advantage lies in a detection window reaching up to 90 days, from an observed collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain accurate for drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is notably recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record for alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a three-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may suffice. When we refer to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in a majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical data: It aids in illustrating a pattern of drug use over a duration, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referenced as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Vanport, PA, the former stands out due to its superior detection accuracy. Hair tests offer a reliable, longer detection window, capturing drug use history over 90 days.

Additionally, hair follicle tests minimize the chances of tampering, unlike urine tests which can be manipulated. This reliability makes it the preferred choice for comprehensive drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Vanport, PA shines with its extended detection period, showcasing substance use over a 90-day timeframe. Employers appreciate this feature as it provides a fuller picture of an individual’s drug history.

This extended window ensures that past drug use is not easily hidden, allowing employers to make informed hiring decisions. The test assesses long-term patterns, unlike other methods that only reveal short-term use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle tests in Vanport, PA lies in their tamper-resistant nature, offering confidence in the results. This method significantly lowers risks linked to sample adulteration.

For reliable and indisputable outcomes, choose hair follicle tests. They ensure that the results you receive are accurate reflections of actual substance use, eliminating doubts about sample integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
