Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Vintondale, Pennsylvania. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with facilities across the country ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. This analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers are turning to these tests. The key advantage is a prolonged detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly foolproof. However, when evaluating drug intake within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by locking in biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair has the potential to reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For cases involving EtG, add-ons, or more than a 10-panel test, 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When citing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the beginning stages of introducing a sample into a laboratory's database. It includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any data not input through electronic chain of custody means.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. This process is cost-friendly for eliminating drug use in most samples, but a positive result must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

For a sample indicated as positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original collection and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmatory analysis of any positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are particularly challenging to alter, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical substance use analysis: These tests can demonstrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
