In Williamstown, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers spanning all cities nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests analyze substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, with tailored hair testing options available.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the standard for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer this method over standard urine tests. Popular among zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation use cases, the main advantage of hair drug tests is their extended drug detection period, lasting up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective strategy for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can detect substances for as long as three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to adulterate, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, around 200 strands (approximating a #2 pencil in size), cut close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels over 10, a quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we talk about head hair, it pertains to scalp hair only; body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample processing into a laboratory framework. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly means to discount drug use for most samples, but a positive outcome needs confirmation to hold up in legal processes. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

If a Screening stage outcome is presumptively positive, more hair is extracted from the beginning sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are taken from hair at a substantially lesser concentration compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the hardest to perform.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples testing presumptive positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have a limited window.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy of results.
  • Historical insights: It offers a timeline of drug use across an extended period, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs become visible in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to incur more costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," these tests actually analyze the hair shaft and not the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Williamstown, PA, hair follicle tests outshine urine tests with their superior detection capabilities. Hair testing provides a comprehensive look at an individual's drug history, outstripping the short detection window of urine tests. This wider window allows employers to make informed staffing decisions based on reliable substance history.

The accuracy of hair testing ensures that results are dependable and less susceptible to manipulations compared to urine tests. This provides a clearer understanding of an individual’s long-term substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Williamstown, PA, benefit from the extensive detection window of hair follicle testing. By capturing drug use over a 90-day period, organizations gain valuable insights into an employee's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
