In Wilson, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether for drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide for conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. This method can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years for drug testing procedures. They're increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and probationary programs prefer this method. Its primary advantage is a prolonged detection period of up to 90 days. Despite its strengths, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-lasting history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal approximately a 3-month detection timeframe for substances. It's easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, offering an ideal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary examination for substance abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, positive findings need verification for legal proceedings. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the first specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair analysis is the most intricate procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all tentative positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days back, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a user's drug consumption pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No immediate use detection: It usually requires 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
