In Fairpoint, South Dakota, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our centers excel in these tests, available throughout all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests can be tailored for substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG according to specific needs.

Recently, the incorporation of hair follicle drug testing in drug screenings has increased. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation opt for hair follicle tests. This method's advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, using an observed collection process that's almost impossible to falsify. Yet, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil), nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent measure of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test processing in the laboratory consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is processed into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not capture.

Screening is a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While a cost-efficient strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating is significantly difficult in hair drug tests, rendering the results more precise.
  • Chronological usage data: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent consumption: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
