Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Arlington, Tennessee. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with testing centers across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body are required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or through other custom hair testing methods.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a common choice for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method suits employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended window of drug use detection, lasting up to 90 days, being an observed process, and making cheating extremely challenging. However, when detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the favored option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately 200 strands of hair (matching the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels greater than 10, it's suggested to use 150mg of the specimen. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, it exclusively means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was adequately sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening applies quick initial testing for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug usage in most cases, any positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positive outcomes undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to the review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines hair strands, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the advantages of hair follicle testing to that of traditional urine tests in Arlington, TN, hair testing showcases superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a wider window that urine tests simply cannot match. Additionally, the robust nature of the test ensures it is more dependable and harder to compromise.

Employers and legal professionals often choose hair drug testing for its consistent results and ability to deliver a comprehensive view of substance use history. The enhanced reliability of hair testing makes it advantageous over traditional urine tests, reaffirming its place as a superior choice in drug screening.

Extended Detection Window

In Arlington, TN, hair follicle testing is distinguished by its extended detection window, allowing the identification of drug use over a prolonged 90-day period. This characteristic provides employers with a broader view of an individual's substance history, aiding in more informed decision-making processes for hiring or retention.

This extended detection timeframe supports the assurance of workplace standards and policies, offering a detailed examination of potential or current employees' drug use behaviors. It highlights historical usage over recent drug tests, making it an ideal method for comprehensive substance analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
