Located in Bogota, Tennessee, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate facilities across the country capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are needed. We provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Rather than opting for standard urine tests, many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are now choosing hair drug tests. These tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation departments due to their longer detection period of up to 90 days. They are administered under supervision, reducing the likelihood of tampering, though urine tests remain the most accurate for recent usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by containing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of logging a sample into the laboratory’s system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial rapid check for drug presence is performed. Screening is a cost-effective strategy to identify drug usage in most cases; however, a positive result from screening needs further confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations in contrast to other methods such as urine or oral fluids, which is why hair drug screening is technically demanding.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that initially test positive undergo washing as needed before Confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Minimal risk of manipulation: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Shows historical usage: Provides an overview of drug use over an extended period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent use detection: It typically takes around 5 to 7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is generally costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Bogota, TN, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The superior detection accuracy of hair testing allows it to uncover substance use far beyond the narrow timeframe of urine tests, which only detect recent drug activity. This extends the reliability of the test results and provides a holistic view of an individual's substance history.

Urine testing, while common, cannot match the comprehensive coverage of hair follicle drug tests. Employers and authorities prefer hair testing for its longer detection window, making it nearly impossible to deceive. This gives a deeper insight into past drug use, crucial for maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

In Bogota, TN, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing serves as a robust tool for assessing an individual's substance use. Able to detect drug activity for up to 90 days, this method surpasses traditional testing techniques that cover a much shorter timeframe. This feature equips employers with a comprehensive understanding of an applicant’s or employee's drug history.

The extensive look-back period of hair follicle drug testing provides a critical advantage in maintaining a thorough evaluation process. By reflecting drug use over several months, it allows employers to enforce policies effectively and make informed decisions regarding hiring and ongoing employment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Bogota, TN, offers a tamper-resistant approach to drug screening, significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike other methods, this test is conducted in a controlled environment, making it difficult to manipulate the outcomes, which leads to unquestionable accuracy of the results.

The reliability of hair follicle drug tests stems from their resistance to tampering, ensuring that the results reflect the true substance use history of the subject. This confidence in the integrity of the test results is crucial for employers and institutions that rely on precise data for decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
