Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cottontown, Tennessee. For anyone requiring a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing ensures that we have centers in all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. These hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has escalated. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts favor a hair drug test over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial authorities, and individuals on probation frequently utilize these tests. The major advantage lies in an extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, making deception nearly impossible. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a retrospective record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is harvested close to the scalp, it can indicate substance use for up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

An ideal specimen consists of a 1.5-inch segment, equivalent to approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) situated nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding ten panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to determine the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample first undergoes processing in the lab’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents the initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal considerations. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive while in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents as the most challenging methodology.

To verify positive Screening outcomes, Confirmation is executed employing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing when necessary. The entire laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 licensing standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify substance use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Hair drug testing is notably hard to deceive, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a record of drug use patterns across time, rather than focusing solely on recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
