Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Eastview, Tennessee. Our expertise lies in hair drug and alcohol testing with centers available in cities nationwide. Typically, individuals need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other body parts for the test. These hair screenings detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair drug tests benefit organizations with strict drug use policies, courts, and those managing probation cases. The main advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, through an observed process, making it very hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best option for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of growing hair capture biomarkers, offering a long-term record of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil's size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Use a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair means scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four crucial stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step of entering a sample into a lab's records. This process verifies correct sample sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves completing any extra data requirements not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary quick drug check. While being a budget-friendly way to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive screening result must be confirmed for court acceptance. Presumptively positive Screening samples require secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory process is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It conveys a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Constraints:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variability can impact the metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over urine tests in Eastview, TN. These tests have a broader detection window, recognizing drug use over a much longer period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
