Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ellendale, Tennessee. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair testing and have centers nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

More recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over the traditional urine test. These tests are used by organizations enforcing strict drug policies, the justice system, and those on probation. Hair follicle tests offer the advantage of a detection window up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are almost impossible to tamper with. However, for identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing is still considered the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair samples can yield a detection window of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation assessments. For EtG, additional tests, and tests above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while the term body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in the laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into the laboratory system. This entails ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not already covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen to be used in the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing one of the most complex methods to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use as far back as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection duration.
  • Difficulty to compromise results: The structure of hair drug tests makes it highly challenging to falsify results, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Provision of usage history: This method reveals a drug use pattern over an extended timeframe, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other types of drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing versus urine testing in Ellendale, TN, hair tests provide undeniable benefits. With a superior detection period, hair tests offer an up to 90-day drug use history, far exceeding the shorter duration that urine tests cover.

Hair follicle testing exhibits greater accuracy and reliability. Its resilience against tampering and longer detection window make it a more trusted method over traditional urine tests, ensuring compliance for employers with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Ellendale, TN, is a significant advantage for employers seeking comprehensive drug use history. While urine tests offer a brief overview, hair tests provide an up to 90-day history of substance use.

This allows employers to gain deeper insights into an employee or applicant's long-term habits. Such thorough analysis aids in making informed hiring decisions and maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle tests in Ellendale, TN, is their tamper-resistant nature. This testing method greatly mitigates the risk of adulteration, providing authentic results that are difficult to dispute.

The process ensures integrity due to the observed collection, dismissing the chances of deceit. Employers and legal entities can rely on the accuracy and validity of these test results for critical decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
