Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fairgarden, Tennessee. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in these services with nationwide centers ready to administer the test. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is needed. This test can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to meet specific testing requirements.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method in drug testing than before. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is preferred due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, secure collection process, and high resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, the urine test remains the best option for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol usage for up to a roughly 3-month span. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial introduction into the lab’s system. This phase includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplemental data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any sample with a presumptive positive result in Screening requires a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are removed from hair at noticeably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Gives historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
