Providing comprehensive hair follicle testing services, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to in Macedonia, Tennessee. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we operate nationwide centers where these tests can be efficiently conducted. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is usually required from the head or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests are increasingly favored for drug screening. Various employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now require these tests over traditional urine analysis. They are preferred in zero-tolerance environments and probation cases due to their extensive detection window, which can extend to 90 days, and the difficulty in manipulating results. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are now recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence. When taken nearest to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over an approximate 3-month period. It's effortless to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, extensions, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab processing of a drug screening outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data input not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive hit must be verified for legal admissibility. Accordingly, samples that are presumptive positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears to be positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Verifying any positive screening results is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection interval: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to urine screenings which possess a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can chart a timeline of drug usage across a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Determinants such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
