Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug testing in Tusculum, Tennessee. Specializing in hair testing, our centers nationwide, including Tusculum, perform hair drug and alcohol tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, these tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customizable options.

Hair follicle tests have become a prevalent method for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer this over standard urine testing. These tests are vital for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. They offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, involve observed collection, and are hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use data for up to about three months. This method is uncomplicated to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, serving as the optimal sample for both initial screening and further confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is recommended. It is advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process consists of four central phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is first incorporated into a lab's system. This phase includes ensuring correct sample seal and shipment, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) at random, and completing any extra information entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift review for substances of abuse. While economical, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in judicial settings. Samples with presumptive positives need further confirmation.

For samples indicating presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original batch and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at substantially lower concentrations than seen with methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, showcasing the complexity of hair drug screening techniques.

Analyzing and confirming any positive results involve GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS processes. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire procedural series from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection timeline: Hair drug testing identifies drug use up to 90 days prior, while urine tests have shorter detection periods.
  • Reduced chance of manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage record: Displays a drug use trend over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth might influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests," these tests assess the hair shaft, not the root beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests in Tusculum, TN. With superior accuracy, hair tests detect a broader range of substances over a more extended period. While urine tests focus on short-term detection, hair tests provide a reliable history of drug use, enhancing overall detection accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
