Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Westel, Tennessee. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers available nationwide, including every city, that can conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Recently, using a hair follicle drug test has become more common for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are preferring hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases. These tests offer an extended drug use detection period, usually up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Urine tests, however, are still deemed most accurate for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair Drug Testing

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair, it offers an extensive record of alcohol and drug use. Hair samples taken close to the scalp can reveal a substance presence window of up to 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. The term head hair denotes only scalp hair, while body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for lab processing a drug test result comprises four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with incorporating a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring that it was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient technique to identify drug use in most samples, any positive screens demand confirmation to be valid for legal proceedings. Samples that display presumptive positivity in Screening do require further confirmation.

If a sample exhibits presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (i.e., urine or oral fluids), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening implementation.

Positive Screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug intake up to 90 days prior, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It sheds light on a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternate methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can hugely impact the drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this assessment inspects the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Westel, TN, hair testing emerges superior due to its extensive detection window and resistance to tampering.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
