In Beaumont Place, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, we boast testing centers nationwide, ready for deployment. For accurate testing, it's essential to have around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. Our analyses can detect a range of substances including drugs and alcohol/ETG, with customizable options available.

The advent of hair follicle drug testing has reshaped drug screening practices in recent years. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance businesses, courts, and probation officers leverage its extended detection capabilities, spanning up to 90 days, and it is almost impossible to circumvent. Yet, for recent drug use—within the last 5 days—urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced from close to the scalp, hair can indicate activity for up to roughly a 3-month span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sampling of around 200 hair fibers (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimum amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair varieties (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s database. This process involves verifying the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any remaining data not covered electronically by a chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to identify drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-acceptable. Samples that are flagged as potentially positive during Screening necessitate confirmatory testing.

If Screening suggests positivity, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is undertaken via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection window.
  • Resistance to deceit: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Illustrates usage history: Provides insights into drug use patterns over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of indicating recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
