Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Blue Ridge, TX. If you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis, with facilities available nationwide that can conduct the test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug tests. Organizations such as employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often favor it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are vital for employers with strict no-drug policies and courts managing probation cases. They provide a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, making tampering substantially difficult. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands, hair provides an extended history regarding the use of alcohol and illicit substances. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and drug use for up to about a 90-day window. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment comprising about 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) when collected near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair alone. Body hair refers to all other categories of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process encompasses four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transmitted, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry supplemental to the electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for illicit drug presence. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for the majority of specimens, a positive result in Screening must undergo Confirmation to be legally valid. Specimens with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The processes from Accessioning to Confirmation are inspected under the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the ability to reveal drug use over a span of 90 days, in comparison to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are exceptionally difficult to tamper with, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: They can reveal drug usage trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a latency of about 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Blue Ridge, TX, hair follicle testing excels over traditional urine tests by offering superior detection capabilities. Employers and organizations prefer hair analysis for its accuracy and reliability, reducing false negatives and inaccuracies.

Hair testing provides a broader detection window, uncovering drug use over a longer time than urine tests. This aspect is crucial for workplaces with stringent drug-free policies.

Besides extended detection periods, hair tests minimize tampering risks. While urine tests detect recent use, hair tests are unbeatable for a comprehensive substance-use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Blue Ridge, TX, hair follicle testing offers an extended view into an individual's drug use history, up to 90 days, providing a thorough understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance habits.

This extensive detection window is beneficial for employers seeking to enforce long-term drug-free workplace policies. It identifies habitual use that short-term tests might miss.

Having an extended detection period, hair tests offer clarity and confidence in employment decisions, ensuring a safe and drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Blue Ridge, TX, significantly reduces the chances of sample tampering, providing consistent and reliable results crucial for confident decision-making.

This testing method is almost impossible to adulterate, safeguarding the integrity of results, which is vital for accurate employee screening and compliance with legal or workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
