Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Elm Creek, Texas. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, providing facilities across all U.S. cities where hair analyses can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair evaluations can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug screening has become more prevalent in drug testing practices. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine assessments. Such tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation departments. Their main advantage is a significantly longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, with samples taken under direct observation, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug ingestion by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of an extending hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for mailing.

A sample 1.5 inches long with around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, added tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is an option. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for evaluating a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of inputting a sample into a lab's system. This covers ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for signs of drug use. Though Screening is an efficient approach to eliminate drug use potential in most cases, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be valid legally. Samples yielding positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples flagged as positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction process. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

To confirm any positive screening outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are employed. Samples with initial positive results undergo washing before confirmation as determined. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning through Confirmation adheres to standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) under Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug use patterns over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detectability in hair requires about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically costs more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variability can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
