Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Garden Ridge, Texas. Specializing in hair analysis, we operate testing facilities across every state to conduct these examinations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of either scalp or body hair is required for testing. Our hair tests check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug screening methods. Organizations such as employers, legal authorities, and addiction treatment specialists now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. Employers upholding strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services leverage hair testing due to its extended detection spans, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, are collected under direct supervision, and are highly immune to tampering. Conversely, urine tests remain highly accurate for recent drug use detection within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage, hair testing has gained prominence. It captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected from the scalp area, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and the sample is easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands, equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system, which comprises verifying the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug presence for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples presumed positive during Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations considerably lower than those in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. "Presumptive positive" samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair class and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Fraud resistance: Hair drug tests are significantly harder to deceive, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical consumption: Offers insights into drug habits over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Results inconsistency: Variables like hair color and growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Garden Ridge, TX, due to its superior detection duration. While urine tests are effective for recent substance use, hair testing offers a longer view, making it indispensable for employers seeking comprehensive evaluations.

The detection accuracy and reliability of hair testing also overshadow traditional methods. As urine tests may miss traces beyond a specific window, hair tests cover an extended period, providing a thorough analysis of an individual's history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Garden Ridge, TX, allows employers to trace substance use up to 90 days. This breadth in screenings provides a more detailed report of an individual's recent behavior.

Covering a span that might go undetected with other tests, hair analyses equip employers with in-depth insights, impacting hiring and retention decisions positively by painting a full-picture of applicants and employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Garden Ridge, TX, offers a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing. The sample collection process significantly curtails the potential for adulteration, unlike more common methods, safeguarding the integrity of the results.

By prioritizing this approach, hair tests provide a formidable defense against manipulation attempts, ensuring unquestionable accuracy and imbuing trustworthiness into the testing process itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
