At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Kohrville, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with centers in every city ready to conduct such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is adequate. Our tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Various employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method appeals to employers with strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probation cases due to its longer detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, and observed collection process, minimizing cheating. Yet, for drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance intake by holding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection window for substances. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. In mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The core stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises checking the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data inputs missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid examination for signs of drug abuse. While Screening cost-effectively eliminates drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive screening samples require further validation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction, where drugs are derived from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most difficult technique to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive from Screening is done by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Washing of all potential positive samples is conducted before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation receives assessment under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's notably hard to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Yields historical perspective: It reveals a drug use trend over time, beyond recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in findings: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kohrville, TX, hair follicle testing is a superior alternative to urine tests for substance detection. The tests offer unmatched detection accuracy and reliability, making them ideal for comprehensive drug screening. Hair testing can identify drug use over extended periods, ensuring a more thorough assessment compared to urine tests.

The benefits of hair tests include their ability to detect drug use over a longer window, up to 90 days. This provides a broader perspective on drug history, making hair follicle testing increasingly popular among various stakeholders who require stringent and reliable drug testing.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection window. In Kohrville, TX, employers benefit from the test's ability to reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, unmatched by shorter-lived urine tests.

This prolonged detection capability provides a clearer picture of behavioral patterns, ensuring that employers can make informed decisions based on a thorough understanding of an employee's or applicant's drug use history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
