In La Blanca, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Our hair testing expertise encompasses drug and alcohol evaluations, with testing centers available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for analysis. From drugs to alcohol/ETG, our hair tests are adaptable to various needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly supplanted urine tests for drug screening. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests. Employers with strict policies, including courts and probation offices, rely on these tests due to their extended 90-day detection window. Hair tests, which are hard to tamper with, are collected under supervision, but for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold precedence.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by entrapping biomarkers within the strands. When sourced near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of nearly 3 months for various substances. Hair specimens are easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

An ideal sample is a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp, equating to about 100mg of hair, suitable for screening and confirmatory purposes. For EtG additions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for processing drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical data: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
