Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Homa, Texas. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in providing hair testing solutions, with testing centers throughout all major cities Nationwide prepared to perform a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required. Hair tests can be evaluated for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly employed hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts favor these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are chosen by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Key advantages of hair follicle drug tests include a substantially longer detection span of up to 90 days, gathered in monitored collection, and difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting substance use within the prior 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair provides a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taking samples near the scalp, it can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for tests of screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If there is no scalp hair available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When speaking of head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is integrated into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening economically excludes most samples from drug usage concerns, any sample with a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive at Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are separated from hair with lower concentration levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug testing the most complex technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening output is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical patterns: It can provide a timeline of drug usage over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Differences in hair color and personal hair growth rates can alter drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
