Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Lasana, Texas. Whether you require drug or alcohol hair analysis, we are experts in this field and have centers in every city across the nation ready to perform such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. We can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options during hair analysis.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a favored method for drug screening. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts request this over the standard urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probationers adopt hair follicle drug testing. Its major advantage lies in its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, using an observed collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for identifying drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a lengthy history of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 3-month period of exposure to alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step entails verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be substantiated for it to be accepted in court. All samples that are provisionally positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging approach to conduct.

To confirm a positive screening result, testing is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical usage data: It can display drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly tagged as "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Lasana, TX, offer distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Their superior detection accuracy covers a longer history of drug use, providing reliable results. The precision of hair testing ensures consistency in identifying drug use, surpassing the traditional methods typically used.

When comparing hair testing to urine tests, the reliability and comprehensive detection make hair testing a preferred choice. It not only provides a longer detection window but also offers a tamper-proof method, emphasizing accuracy and credibility, crucial for maintaining policy compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Lasana, TX, provides an extended detection window, examining substance use over a period reaching up to 90 days. This long-term analysis offers employers a comprehensive view of an individual’s behavioral history regarding substance consumption, influencing their decision-making processes.

Extended detection capability of hair tests far exceeds that of urine tests, making it an ideal method for employers and courts. This helps them gauge sustained drug use, enabling more informed and reliable evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Lasana, TX, trusts hair follicle tests to substantially minimize the risk of sample adulteration. These tests deliver undeniable and reliable outcomes, as the collection process is less prone to tampering than urine tests, ensuring authenticity and confidence in the results provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
