Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Lincoln Park, Texas. For hair drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise is in hair testing; with facilities nationwide, we can conduct tests efficiently. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and individuals on probation due to their lengthy detection window of up to 90 days. They are collected under supervision, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most effective for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a long-term archive of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is insufficient, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps involved in laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry requirements not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening process is a quick preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economically efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be acceptable in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, in contrast with the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lincoln Park, TX, is setting a new standard in drug detection accuracy compared to urine testing. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a broader detection window, ensuring a more comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use history. Employers benefit from its precise detection capabilities, offering reliable results that are tough to dispute.

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests, one notes the superior reliability of hair tests. Follicle testing detects a wider array of substances over an extended period, whereas urine tests are limited to more recent usage. This makes hair follicle testing exceptionally useful for zero-tolerance policies in workplace settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
