Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Los Angeles, Texas. Whether you require drug or alcohol hair testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis. We have nationwide testing centers, including all cities, ready to conduct hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provides other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Companies, courts, and substance specialists often prefer hair analysis over conventional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are chosen by firms with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and probationers. Its main advantage is a longer drug use detection span—up to 90 days—ensured by observed collection and resistance to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has emerged as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate long-term drug and alcohol history by capturing biomarkers within the filament of the hair strand as it grows. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easy to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional needs, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the hair. It's advised to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The primary phases in lab processing of a drug test finding include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary entry of a specimen into a laboratory’s database. This process consists of ensuring the specimen was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial streamlined assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to stand in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening need secondary verification.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair in this stage at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The complete lab processing from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring higher precision in findings.
  • Offers historical insight: These tests can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It usually takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is proving to be superior to traditional urine tests in Los Angeles, TX. This method provides better detection accuracy and is considered more reliable. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis offers a longer detection period, making it a preferred choice for companies with strict substance-free policies. Its resistance to tampering provides an additional layer of security that is essential for maintaining rigorous standards.

Employers and legal entities benefit significantly from hair testing due to its ability to capture a comprehensive view of an individual's drug history. While urine tests might only reflect recent usage, hair tests cover a broader timeframe, offering insights over several weeks to months. This wider scope of detection is what sets hair testing apart in its capability to ensure comprehensive drug assessments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Los Angeles, TX, is a key strength, capturing drug use history for up to 90 days. This comprehensive period gives employers a thorough understanding of a candidate's substance usage, crucial for those with stringent drug-free endeavors. This factor makes hair testing an invaluable tool for organizations seeking a complete picture of drug involvement over time.

The ability to detect drugs over such an extensive timeframe surpasses traditional testing methods by providing a detailed substance history. It is particularly beneficial for employers needing reassurance that their workforce maintains a substance-free environment over time. The longevity of detection inherent in hair testing supports better-informed employment decisions and ensures greater workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
