Accredited Drug Testing provides top-tier hair follicle drug testing in Melody Hills, Texas. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we are experts in this testing method and have facilities nationwide to carry out the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for these tests, which can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has increasingly become a common method for drug screening in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by entities with zero-tolerance policies due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, the strict collection method, and the challenge of tampering. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a retrospective view of alcohol and drug use. A sample taken near the scalp affords a detection period of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands, roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's width, near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, the same quantity of body hair may be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "Body hair" includes all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing missing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most cases, a positive screen needs confirmation to be validated legally. Any samples considered presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this point, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which positions hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests offer drug detection for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: It can show drug use patterns over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The test commonly known as "hair follicle tests" actually analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Melody Hills, TX, hair follicle testing outshines customary urine tests. The major advantage of hair testing is its extended detection scope, reaching substances used up to 90 days prior, providing a clearer and more reliable picture of individual drug use compared to urine tests.

The accuracy of hair testing in spotting chronic use surpasses urine tests. Hair tests offer a profound insight into drug habits and can't be easily manipulated, unlike their urine counterparts.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Melody Hills, TX can take advantage of hair follicle tests for a wider detection window. This method exposes drug use over a period as long as 90 days, offering a fuller representation of an individual's drug history and ensuring a more informed hiring decision.

By catching substances over a prolonged time, hair testing proves invaluable for businesses and authorities requiring extensive insight into past drug consumption, making it a superior choice in employee assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration in Melody Hills, TX. With no easy way to alter samples, this testing assures credible, unshakeable outcomes that withstand scrutiny.

Hair tests are almost impervious to cheating compared to other testing methods. This quality holds importance for both companies and legal systems, ensuring conformity and honesty in drug testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
