Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Berlin, Texas. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our expertise in hair screening is unmatched, with facilities available across numerous cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Analyzing hair samples can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle evaluations. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary programs due to their extended detection capabilities, up to 90 days. This nearly tamper-proof, observed collection method ensures reliability, although urine tests remain more accurate for recent usage detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as an efficient instrument for spotting drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a prolonged pattern of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands. Near-scalp hair collection offers an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial entry of a sample into a lab's workflow. This step involves checking if the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to negate drug use for most samples, positive results need confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require secondary validation.

If findings show a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis remains the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before necessary confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with narrower windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves exceptionally challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers usage trends: It unveils a consistent pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use undetectable: Drugs become visible in hair approximately 5-7 days after intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
