Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Northwest Bell, Texas. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with testing facilities available in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has progressively become a popular method for conducting drug tests. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation. A key advantage includes an extended detection window of up to 90 days, with observations made under direct collection, making it highly resistant to tampering. Whereas, urine testing remains the most accurate for recent use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now regarded as a potent method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs of up to around 3 months. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair fibers (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or checks exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The four primary steps included in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is an efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples that exhibit presumptive positivity during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Any positive screening outcome is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analyses can trace drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug analyses are generally more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For those in Northwest Bell, Texas questioning the effectiveness of hair versus urine drug tests, the former offers notable benefits. Hair follicle testing provides superior detection periods, revealing drug use over months rather than days. Such an approach ensures greater veracity and reliability, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's consumption habits, far surpassing the limited scope of urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
