Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Patton Village, Texas. Specializing in hair testing, we ensure access to our services nationwide, with numerous centers capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside various customizable testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly favored in recent years over conventional methods. Organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over typical urine screenings. Suited for zero-tolerance workplaces, court requirements, and probation verification, hair tests extend detection periods up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly foolproof process—despite urine tests remaining the gold standard for substances consumed within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of drug and alcohol intake, encompassing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window extending up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A section of hair measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary panels and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If lacking scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair accounts for all other hair variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of the sample into a lab's system, which involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data entry requirements not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves an expedited assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally credible. Samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which offer a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test proves very difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over an extended period, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: A timeframe of about 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variability can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Patton Village, TX, hair follicle testing distinctly outperforms urine testing due to superior accuracy and reliability. These tests detect a broader range of substances over an extended period, with insights unaffected by recent cleansing efforts or superficial alterations. Hair testing thereby offers a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history, surpassing the limited scope of urine tests.

Additionally, hair tests provide a more secure option with reduced chances of manipulation. Whereas urine samples can sometimes be altered or tampered with, hair follicle examinations remain constant, offering organizations a dependable solution to uphold workplace standards, especially in environments prioritizing stringent drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Patton Village, TX, excels with its extended detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This long-term insight equips employers with thorough knowledge of an applicant's or existing employee's substance habits over months rather than mere days, presenting a clearer picture of their commitment to sober living.

This prolonged detection capacity results in a more comprehensive view, fostering informed decision-making by anticipating possible workplace risks. By revealing an extended timeline of drug use, hair tests provide a winning solution for organizations prioritizing comprehensive substance use evaluations in their screening processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Patton Village, TX, is its resistance to tampering, substantially minimizing the likelihood of sample adulteration. Hair samples undergo rigorous collection and analysis procedures, ensuring the results delivered are genuine, precise, and beyond question.

Unlike other testing methods susceptible to manipulation, hair tests safeguard the integrity of the results, consequently fostering trust in the process. Employers benefit from peace of mind, knowing that the findings represent an honest reflection of an individual's drug history, uninfluenced by possible deceptive practices common in other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
