Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug tests in Point Comfort, Texas. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with testing facilities in every city across the nation that can conduct hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently require hair follicle drug tests. The major advantage is the much longer detection timeline of up to 90 days, collected via an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent means for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibrous structure of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair may offer a detection period of up to a 3-months for substances and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A segment of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and delivery, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are taken from hair at a notably reduced concentration compared to other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 specifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers usage history: It can outline a substance use trend over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
