In Rio Hondo, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers a full range of hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol assessment through hair analysis, we provide nationwide testing centers, including local facilities, ready to perform these tests. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether it's from the head or body, for effective drug or alcohol testing including customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a favored method for many in drug testing procedures. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine ones. With employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, the tests prove invaluable for probationary students and legal proceedings. Benefits include a broader detection window, approximately 90 days, ensuring the test is both observed and virtually tamper-proof. Yet, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. By collecting hair strands near the scalp, it offers a long-term detection period of up to 3 months. Hair sampling is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of approximately 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will generate about 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional testing, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended to measure the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not obtainable, an equal quantity of body hair is an acceptable substitute. Terminology referencing head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial introduction of a sample into a laboratory's framework, including verifying proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it serves as a cost-sensitive technique to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If Screening infers a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the sample for further processing in Extraction. Drugs are then isolated at lower concentrations from hair than other mediums (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening distinctively challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a diminished detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical use pattern: Offers insights into drug consumption over time beyond recent use only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
