At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Riviera, Texas. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in this area, with testing centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is necessary for the test. These tests can detect drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often require hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies and are used by courts and individuals on probation. A major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, covering up to 90 days, through an observed process that is near impossible to deceive, although urine tests remain most accurate for recent (5-day) use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When extracted close to the scalp, hair can extend a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG tests, additional testing, and/or more than 10 panel tests, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the sample’s entry into the lab’s system. This phase includes checking the sample's seal and shipping method, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift analysis for drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal proceedings. Any sample with a presumptive positive result in Screening requires secondary verification.

If the Screening stage yields a presumptive positive result, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from the hair at a lower concentration than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly hard to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It provides a chronology of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
