In Saginaw, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol screenings, our expertise in hair examinations is unmatched. We operate testing facilities nationwide, capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are needed for testing. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom hair testing options.

There has been a noticeable rise in the use of hair follicle drug tests for substance screening in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer this method over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those overseeing probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, achieved through monitored collection. While accurate, urine tests remain best for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When procured from the scalp region, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. In terms of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming that the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening effectively eliminates drug usage in most samples economically, a positive result requires verification for legal credibility. Samples appearing positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the most challenging methodology.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as positive are washed before Confirmation if necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter examination period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Undermining hair drug tests is notably tough, thus yielding more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It outlines a comprehensive pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug assessments typically entail greater expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand as opposed to the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over urine tests in Saginaw, TX. The superior detection accuracy of hair testing ensures a more reliable assessment of substance use. It detects a wider range of substances and provides a better historical record of drug use. For situations where reliability and long-term detection are critical, such as employment screenings and legal cases, hair tests are preferred due to their comprehensive results.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Saginaw, TX, is its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days. This long detection period gives employers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance history, ensuring that decisions made are based on a thorough understanding of past behavior, significantly reducing risks associated with hiring or management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Saginaw, TX, hair follicle tests are known for their tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, the possibilities of sample adulteration or substitution are minimal. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
