In San Carlos, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in this field, we provide testing centers nationwide. For a hair test, a sample length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically needed, either from the head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for substance testing. Employers and legal entities prefer hair tests over urine tests for stricter drug policies. Hair testing offers an extensive detection period of up to 90 days, is conducted under observation, and is difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying recent drug use within a five-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. It offers a long-term record by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it develops. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for substances including alcohol. The method is easy to perform, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair refers to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other kinds (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, involving the introduction of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. As an affordable method, Screening can rule out most drug use; however, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples testing positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen screen positive, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted for further processing. At this stage, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a lower concentration compared with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation step, essential for any positive screening result, utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, samples that are presumptively positive are washed as required. A thorough review of the entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days in contrast to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: The accuracy of hair drug tests is enhanced by the difficulty of tampering.
  • Provides usage history: Beyond recent drug intake, it offers a timeline of patterns over time.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually cost more than other forms of drug tests.
  • Result variation: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
