In Seagoville, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or other body parts can be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug screening methods. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are vital for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Their major advantage is an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing an observed process that's hard to tamper with. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can provide an extended history of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the hair strands as they grow. By taking a sample near the scalp, hair can furnish an alcohol and drug detection timeline of up to 3 months. The procedure for collecting hair is straightforward; it is somewhat resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil), when cut nearest to the scalp, yields about 100mg of hair, which is considered an ideal amount for initial screening and confirming results. For tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. The sample should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, substitute by collecting an equivalent amount of body hair. When we discuss head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, where the sample is logged into the lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry as needed, excluding what the electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to determine drug presence in most samples, a positive result in this phase requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any sample showing presumptive positivity during Screening necessitates further confirmation.

For samples indicating presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those used in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

To confirm a positive result from the screening, methodologies such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. Before confirmation, all samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests reveal drug use over the past 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers a usage timeline: Hair tests can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strands and not the hair follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
