Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services right here in Westway, Texas. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair analysis and have centers across cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is required. Hair testing allows for evaluation of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent choice for conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are increasingly opting for this method over traditional urine tests. Ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, as well as court systems or individuals on probation, hair follicle tests offer benefits such as a 90-day detection window, observed collections, and reduced chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as it grows, offering a long-term account of alcohol and substance usage. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to roughly three months. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil and consisting of about 200 hairs, yields 100mg—ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn't present, an equal body hair amount can be used. "Head hair" pertains strictly to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary steps make up the lab process for drug testing results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any necessary data not included by an electronic chain custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test to check for drug abuse. Though it is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal purposes. Any sample showing a presumptively positive screen necessitates further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial batch for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening challenging.

Positive screening confirmations occur through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed if needed before confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty of cheating a hair drug test makes results more reliable.
  • Tracks past patterns: It shows a usage trend over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other methods.
  • Result variance: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
