In Woodbranch, Texas, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing. Whether seeking to test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing and have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. This method can be tailored to screen for drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other specific needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many entities such as employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This preference is due to the longer detection window of up to 90 days, the observed collection procedure that reduces tampering, and increased difficulty in manipulating results. However, urine tests remain more reliable for detecting more recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strands. When samples are obtained near the scalp, they can offer a detection range of up to roughly 90 days for various substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is sufficient for both screening and confirmation. For tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. In terms of head hair, we mean scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab handling of a test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substance misuse. While it's a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in many samples, any positive results require confirmation for court-related validity. Presumptive positive screenings necessitate further validation.

Presumptive positive outcomes in the Screening phase lead to more hair being taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than in methods like urine or saliva testing, highlighting why hair analysis is particularly challenging.

The Confirmation of positive results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. Every lab phase from Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter window.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's exceedingly hard to deceive a hair test, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Chronological insight: It charts drug use patterns over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent consumption: Drugs are detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis typically costs more than other testing types.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Woodbranch, TX
Comparing the effectiveness of hair testing against traditional urine tests, hair follicle tests often emerge as superior in terms of accuracy and reliability. The extended detection period allows for a more comprehensive overview, uncovering patterns of drug use that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Hair follicle testing provides a more foolproof method of detection because it analyzes a longer period. This distinguishes it from urine tests, which may only capture recent usage, potentially missing chronic or habitual use over time.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Woodbranch, TX
One of the main advantages of hair follicle drug testing is its ability to detect drug use over an extended timeframe, typically up to 90 days. This long detection window offers employers in Woodbranch a thorough insight into an individual’s substance use history, granting a more informed decision-making process.

This broad detection window ensures that even infrequent use is noticeable, making hair follicle testing a critical tool for understanding long-term drug use behaviors. As a result, employers gain a clearer picture of a person's past substance use, enhancing drug policy enforcement.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Woodbranch, TX
Hair follicle tests significantly decrease the threat of sample tampering, providing test results that are reliable and trustworthy. With this method, altering the sample or results is considerably more challenging than with other testing approaches, such as urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
