Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Woodrow, Texas. Our hair drug and alcohol testing expertise spans nationwide with centers in every city to facilitate your needs. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required for testing, whether from the head or body. An analysis can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or facilitate other specialized hair testing protocols.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for screening, frequently used by employers, judges, and substance abuse experts, in place of traditional urine tests. These tests cater to organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probationary requirements. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, minimizing the risk of manipulation. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair for testing is now regarded as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a detection period that can extend up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will result in a 100mg sample, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG screenings, extensions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation is to use 150mg of the sample. It is advised to assess the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be harvested. When talking about head hair, it denotes only the scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other variants (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test outcome in a lab comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a specimen within a laboratory's apparatus. This procedure includes confirming that the specimen was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift examination for drug abuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive outcome necessitates validation to be admissible in legal settings. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening requires subsequent Confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and made ready for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the overall laboratory process is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the recognition to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug screenings can recognize substance use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug screenings are notably tough to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical patterns: It offers an insight into the drug use trend over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify immediate use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyses the hair strand itself, not the scalp-located hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
