In Bellwood, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with centers in every city across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body parts can be tested. Hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more popular method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly prefer hair analysis over the traditional urine test. This method is chosen by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and those on probation due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, collecting under observation, and being nearly impossible to tamper with, yet for last 5-day usage, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers in a growing hair lock in biomarkers, thereby maintaining a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When the hair is taken near the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to around three months for identifying alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is easy, offers resistance to tampering, and can be shipped without hassle.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 strands of hair, comparable in size to a #2 pencil and located nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or over 10-panel testing, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler's scale. If there's no scalp hair available, the same amount can be sourced from body hair. In terms of head hair, it strictly means scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample processing in a lab system. Tasks here involve ensuring correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that wasn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary test for substance abuse. While it's a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug use in many cases, additional confirmation is needed for a positive screen to be legally valid. All samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial batch and goes through Extraction. This step extracts drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation, as necessary. The total lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days due to a longer detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: A hair drug test is almost impossible to evade, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Over time, it can illustrate a drug use pattern, beyond merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Relative to other drug testing techniques, hair drug tests usually carry a higher cost.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
