Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bristow, Virginia. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers available nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be adapted for specific needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation commonly use hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making it difficult to tamper with. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized for its effectiveness, hair testing is a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. Sampling hair near the scalp offers an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to mail.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp constitutes a 100mg hair sample, optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is preferred. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the hair sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may suffice. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample is integrated into the laboratory system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not supplied by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary examination for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples marked as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a second confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The likelihood of cheating a hair drug test is minimal, ensuring accurate outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: Offers insight into drug use patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not show recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite levels found in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a significant advantage over traditional urine testing methods, especially in Bristow, VA. These tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability, allowing for the identification of drug use over a much longer period—up to 90 days—compared to the limited detection window of urine tests. This makes hair testing a preferred option for employers who prioritize accuracy and dependability in their drug testing procedures.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method offers an extended detection window, up to 90 days, in Bristow, VA. This extended window allows employers to gain more insight into an applicant's or employee's past substance use, offering a comprehensive overview of their behavioral history. Such detailed detection capabilities make hair testing an invaluable tool for businesses committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Bristow, VA, provide a tamper-resistant testing method, significantly minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
