Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cascades, Virginia. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing makes us your ideal choice, with testing facilities located in every city across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are suitable for testing. These hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over traditional urine testing for detecting drug use. Employers maintaining strict drug-free workplaces, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly opting for hair tests. The advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under strict observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use by securing biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For testing that includes EtG, add-ons, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within the lab's system. This process involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not already handled electronically.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for controlled substances. Although Screening is an affordable way to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be considered valid in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the initial specimen to prepare for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair testing is particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It's exceptionally tough to deceit a hair drug exam, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a continuous pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs need roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations typically incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing proves superior to urine tests in Cascades, VA, especially in terms of accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests provide a more comprehensive detection window, capturing drug use history over a longer period. This extended timeframe offers enhanced insight for employers requiring stringent drug testing policies, ensuring a drug-free workplace with greater certainty.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Cascades, VA, is renowned for its extended detection period, offering a broader view of an individual's substance use history. Unlike other methods, it covers up to 90 days of potential drug usage, making it invaluable for employers wishing to understand the long-term habits of their applicants or employees. This detailed history aids in making informed hiring and management decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Cascades, VA, hair follicle tests are recognized for their tamper-resistant nature, providing indisputable results. This method minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring that the results are reliable and trustworthy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
