Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Chatham, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we have specialized in hair follicle testing with facilities available in every city nationwide. Hair from the crown of the head, or body hair measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches, can typically be used. Hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing methods have become increasingly prevalent. Courts, employers, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse often opt for hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle tests. The key advantage is an extended detection period up to 90 days, collected in a supervised manner, minimizing cheating potential. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as an archive of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the hair as it grows. When samples are obtained near the scalp, they offer a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and facilitates easy transportation.

To obtain a sample, cut a segment measuring 1.5 inches long, with approximately 200 strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, and this will result in 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for initial testing and verification. For EtG, extended panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. When scalp hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When we discuss head hair, it's specifically related to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory analysis of drug testing include: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary step of processing a sample into the lab’s framework. This process ensures the sample’s integrity during sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data input that an electronic chain of custody may not cover.

Screening is an expedient preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. It is an economical means to eliminate negative results in most samples, yet a positive screening demands verification for legal acceptability. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples presumed positive at Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. The process entails retrieving drugs from the hair at much lower concentrations relative to other methods (like urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of a positive screening arises through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Washing of samples presumed positive is conducted before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests offering a briefer detection span.
  • High resistance to deception: It's exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug evaluation, ensuring heightened accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: It captures a timeline of substance abuse, rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: An estimated 5-7 days might be needed for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other methods of drug testing.
  • Variable outcomes: The results might be influenced by hair color and personal hair growth differences affecting drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
