Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Dundas, Virginia. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is available across the nation with centers in every city, including performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers and judicial bodies now prefer hair testing over urine testing. Hair follicle tests are utilized by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation cases. A key advantage is a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, collected securely and resistant to tampering, while urine tests remain best for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a strong instrument, hair testing is used to spot drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in its fibers, offering a prolonged record of substance use. When taken near the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and can be shipped without difficulty.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is perfect for testing. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for specimen weighing. If head hair can't be obtained, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. By "head hair," we mean scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid test for drug abuse. As a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results from Screening must be confirmed to be legally defensible. Samples that show a positive indication in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

For samples presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair in concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest to execute.

Confirmation of positive screenings is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair test is extremely hard, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It shows a timeline of drug use over an extended period rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be apparent in hair.
  • Cost: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
