Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fort Lee, Virginia. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is adept at hair evaluations, with facilities across all cities Nationwide that can execute a hair assessment. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other custom hair analysis choices.

Recently, drug assessment methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug checks. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer a hair drug check over a urine analysis. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals. A key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection period for drug consumption, usually up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making it highly tamper-proof. Yet, for identifying recent drug use up to 5 days, urine analyses remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The unique composition of hair strands allows them to capture biomarkers from alcohol and drugs over time. By collecting hair samples from near the scalp, it is possible to trace alcohol and drug use for up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, resists tampering to some degree, and is conveniently shipped.

Sampling involves gathering a 1.5-inch length of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp, yielding 100mg — an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests that include EtG, extra analyses, or exceed 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar portion of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result follows four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the integration of a sample into the lab's system. This step includes verifying that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for potential drug abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective strategy for eliminating drug usage in the majority of cases, any positive results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening require secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing more complex.

Confirmation of Screening positives is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, all presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Reduced likelihood of cheating: The integrity of a hair drug test is difficult to compromise, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: These tests reveal drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is generally more costly than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests against traditional urine tests in Fort Lee, VA, hair testing stands out for its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to a short window, hair tests capture a comprehensive substance history, ensuring no consumption goes undetected. Employers value this method for its ability to present a full substance use profile, reinforcing zero-tolerance policies effectively across sectors.

Reliability is key when selecting a drug testing approach, and hair follicle testing provides more accuracy over traditional urine tests. With negligible risk of tampering, these tests are a preferred choice for employers in Fort Lee, VA, ensuring compliance and upholding rigorous drug-free workplace standards. The longer detection window significantly aids in crafting a safer, more dependable work environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Fort Lee, VA provides a substantial advantage with its extended detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This extended period allows employers to gain a more thorough understanding of a prospective or current employee's substance history compared to other testing methods.

A comprehensive perspective on substance use is invaluable for employers in Fort Lee. Hair tests capture long-term drug consumption patterns, providing a reliable resource for decision-making around hiring and maintaining workplace standards. The extended detection window greatly surpasses that of urine tests, ensuring that no substance use is overlooked.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Fort Lee, VA, offer significant advantages for employers seeking reliable results. These tests are notoriously resistant to tampering, ensuring accurate outcomes. The process makes it vastly more challenging to adulterate samples, providing employers with peace of mind regarding the integrity of the test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
