Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive drug testing utilizing hair follicle analysis in Hartfield, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, samples from the crown or body can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a prevalent method for drug screening. Businesses, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over urine tests. They're preferred by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probation officers. The main benefit is the extended detection time, up to 90 days, with minimal risk of tampering. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can present a detection span of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are referring explicitly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (beard, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into the lab system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug substances. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use across most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples perceived as positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is extracted from the sample and set for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations than through other methods (such as urine or saliva). This is why hair drug testing is considered a challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicated as positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can discover drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: The complexity of altering hair test results makes them more reliable.
  • Historical insight: It offers a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hartfield, VA, hair follicle testing is emerging as a preferred method over traditional urine testing. While urine tests detect recent substance use, hair tests offer a broader detection timeline, capturing a history of up to 90 days. This provides a more comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance usage, ensuring higher accuracy and robust results.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Hartfield, VA, benefit from hair follicle testing as it extends the detection window of substance usage to 90 days, offering a thorough view of an employee's history. This type of testing surpasses other methods, empowering employers to make informed decisions based on detailed drug use insights.

In Hartfield, VA, hair follicle tests are recognized for their resistance to tampering, ensuring valid and secure results. Unlike other testing methods that may be susceptible to adulteration, hair tests maintain integrity, providing trustworthy results that are crucial for maintaining high testing standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
