Accredited Drug Testing conducts complete hair follicle drug assessments in Horntown, Virginia. If a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with centers available in every city Nationwide for such testing. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is typically required. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing methods.

The approach for conducting drug evaluations now often includes hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair testing over regular urine assessments. Hair follicle drug evaluations cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. Their main advantage is a significantly extended drug use detection period, generally lasting up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a usage pattern for alcohol and drugs covering up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil), taken close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional services, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for exact weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. Note that when we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a specimen is initially processed into a laboratory's system, confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment of drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are cleaned before undergoing confirmation, if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, increasing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can trace a pattern of drug use across a timeline, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in Horntown, VA. The enhanced detection accuracy showcases hair testing as a more trustworthy method for identifying substance use. While urine tests show recent use, hair evaluations ensure a broader and more reliable history, reinforcing their effectiveness in maintaining safe environments.

Extended Detection Window

In Horntown, VA, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, capturing drug use over about 90 days. This broad perspective helps employers better understand a person's long-term substance habits, thereby aiding in informed hiring decisions. An expansive detection period ensures comprehensive substance history insights.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
