Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Hybla Valley, Virginia. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, we have expertise in hair analysis and operate centers nationwide to perform such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be tested. Hair samples are analyzed for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a commonly utilized method for drug detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probation services use hair testing for its benefits, such as longer detection windows, which typically extend to 90 days. The collection is directly observed and tough to falsify. However, urine testing remains superior for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of up to roughly three months. The sampling of hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and suitable for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, and those beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If there isn’t enough scalp hair, then a corresponding amount of body hair may be taken. When "head hair" is mentioned, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to other types of hair (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

There are four key phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. It includes confirming the sample's sealing and correct shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might lack.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid check for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening need subsequent verification.

For samples suspect in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned appropriately before confirmation. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Tampering with hair drug tests is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Gives historical record: It can show a timeline of drug use over an extended period, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Hybla Valley, VA, offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. These tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability, as they are difficult to manipulate and offer a more comprehensive overview of drug use over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
