Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Lincolnia, Virginia. If you require a hair or alcohol test, we are experts in this field and have locations across all cities Nationwide equipped for such testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become integral to drug testing protocols. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. These are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage of a hair test is its extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection process making it hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of substances by securing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. By collecting near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and other drugs. It's straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample length of 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's best to measure this sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The laboratory process for assessing drug test results consists of four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's framework. It checks if the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional entries not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a swift preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require more hair for the Extraction process, where substances are retrieved at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.

Subsequent Confirmation of positive screenings is via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before the necessary Confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the College of American Pathologists' Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug assessments:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair tests are difficult to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They can outline drug patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited recent use detection: Drugs take around 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests often cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations can impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Being labeled as "hair follicle tests" is common, however, they analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing overcomes the limitations of traditional urine tests in Lincolnia, VA. By capturing a broader detection window, these tests offer enhanced reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
