Located in Linton Hall, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in the field, with facilities in cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are switching from traditional urine tests to hair drug tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers prefer hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, their observed collection method, and their resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the hair strands, hair reveals an extended timeline of substance usage. When hair samples are collected near the scalp, they can indicate alcohol and drug use for up to around three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is preferred. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the event that scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. Mention of head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is entered into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that show a potential positive in Screening necessitate further Confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are isolated from hair in a more diluted form compared to other techniques (for example, urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required before Confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which examine a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: It's extremely challenging to evade a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It can exhibit a use pattern over time, rather than just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variances such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
