Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mountain Road, Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with testing centers located in every city Nationwide equipped to conduct a hair test. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is generally needed. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urinalysis. These tests are popular among employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals undergoing probation. The main advantage of a hair drug test is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection procedure, making it highly tamper-resistant. Yet, when identifying drug use within the last five days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is seen as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands provide extended insight into the history of substance use, as they store biomarkers within the strands. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, making it less susceptible to tampering and convenient for transportation.

For an ideal screening and confirmation sample, a 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp is needed to obtain 100mg of hair. For EtG tests, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is comprised of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where the sample is integrated into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry that the electronic chain of custody system hasn't provided.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for potential drug use. Even though Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive Screen must be substantiated to be legally accepted. Every sample that tests positive in the Screening phase necessitates further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

To confirm any positive Screening result, procedures like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo washing before Confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Resistance to cheating: The integrity of a hair drug test is robust, leading to more reliable results.
  • Shows a usage pattern: It reveals a trend of substance use over time instead of only recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates might impact drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", these tests examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
