Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in New Hope, Virginia. Should you require a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in every city nationwide. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, or body hair can be used instead. This method is applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over recent years, drug testing methodologies increasingly utilize hair follicle tests. This change reflects a heightened demand from employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, opting for hair analysis over traditional urine testing. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days and nearly foolproof collection process. Yet, for recent use, within five days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This technique captures a long-standing history of alcohol and drugs within the strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it offers about a 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to collect, harder to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of nearly 200 hairs (approximating the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the perfect amount for an analysis and confirming results. For EtG and more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, equivalent body hair can be used. ‘Head hair’ pertains solely to scalp hair. All other types, including facial and axillary, are classified as ‘body hair’.

Process Overview

There are four key phases in handling a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is where the sample is initially processed into a lab system. It involves checking the sample’s seal and shipping, assigning an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drug usage. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to negate drug use in the majority of samples, any positive findings need additional verification to be accepted in court. Presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening finds a sample presumptively positive, additional hair is collected from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the toughest methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the complete lab process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect in a shorter span.
  • Hard to cheat: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical usage patterns: It indicates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug tests.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
